Q: What is coaching and how is it different to consulting?

A: Coaching and consulting share some similarities, however there are subtle differences.

Consulting is defined as "engaged in the business of giving advice to others in the same field". Consulting usually provides analysis and recommendations on specific areas which require change or improvement. Consulting provides a solution and it is up to the client to choose whether or not to implement.

Coaching can be viewed as a partnership, with the coach and the client working together to achieve certain goals. Coaching, like consulting, will also provide analysis and recommendations on specific areas which require change or improvement. However, this is an ongoing relationship, with the coach providing constant motivation, feedback and support.

According to the International Coach Federation,

"Professional coaches provide an ongoing partnership designed to help clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Coaches help people improve their performances and enhance the quality of their lives. Coaches are trained to listen, to observe and to customize their approach to individual client needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful. The coach's job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has."
